Let's make the most of our lives no matter where we were born
Imagine your name is Citizen Zed.
Imagine your country is at war with your neighboring country. This war has been raging for 4 years and there is no end in sight. Even though it was very difficult to get and extremely expensive to get a passport on your salary, you finally have your passport in your hand. Now, where can you go?
Where can you go?
The answer depends on a few key variables, but mostly how powerful your country is, who your country's friends are (this varies quickly based on geopolitical events), and how do other members of your country behave when they enter the foreign country you want to visit.
Let's say there is a fictional country called Abroadland. Life is awful in your home country, so Abroadland looks really really promising. They have lots of nice jobs, no war, tolerance for your religious beliefs, and you know their language, Abroadese. You learned it in school before Endless War 3 started.
Imagine this is your situation, you'd love to know you have a way out of it. However, looking at todays real world countries such as Iraq, Afganistan, Syria, North Korea, and Sudan these countries all have a varient of a very bad domestic situation like our Citizen Zed.
If your country is at war, land and property is getting stolen or destroyed, and almost no other country is willing to even take you in as a tourist. What can you do?
Pursuing a better life through immigration is something so common we don't think too much about it, but the barriers countries put up to stop or slow people who want to improve their life are vast. These people could improve their lives through increased earnings, higher safety for their family and their property, and better opportunities for their children. However, it's not that easy in practice and this reality really slows the rate of improvement in the world. Talent can't move to where it would be best put to productive use.
Rich countries protect their beautiful nature, gleaming cities, and expensive way of life and put all the barriers up possible to stop others from having the same opportunities. But it doesn't have to be this way: No country is perfect, but policies such as United Arab Emirate's guest work program, entrepreneurship visas, retirement visas, upcoming digital nomad visas, and skilled worked visa programs run by countries like Australia and Canada show a glimpse of what the world could be like if visas were easier. People could travel more freely to work and earn money to better their future and endless human capital would not be squandered in countries that are too broken to make use of the potential of their citizens.
